Interview with Loren Miller about our Gutsy Girls Adventure

What are you most excited about when you think of the Gutsy Girls Adventure?

I love the anticipation of an adventure.  The expectation of experiencing new wild natural landscapes, building new friendships and leaving behind life’s other pressures and chores.  After COVID, we all now know how special the opportunities to travel, and real world experiences are.  I am excited about the footsteps, the conversations, the deep breaths of fresh air, the wildflowers and the joy of sharing these experiences with other women.

This adventure will be particularly special for me, as my daughter Leah is coming too.  It is a chance for us to spend some time together in a very different environment than home, to strengthen our relationship in different ways, and to have some fun together after a really tough couple of years of lockdown.

What made you choose the Walpole Wilderness of Western Australia?

Australia has many special beautiful natural landscapes.  Many of them are on the worn tourist trail. The Walpole Wilderness area is one of the most remote, less well known collection of National Parks and reserves.  Walpole has a unique biodiverse ecosystem, wild windy beaches, sheltered sandy inlets, tall majestic Karri forests and rolling bushy hills scattered with grasstrees and granite outcrops providing intermittent views of the great Southern Ocean.

Home to the Noongar people for thousands of years, Walpole allows you to feel the age and uniqueness of this remote landscape, distancing urban pressures and bringing powerful opportunities for reflection.

Why an adventure just for women?

It’s about making outdoor adventures more accessible for women. Women often like to approach adventure differently – less about adrenalin and concurring landscapes, and more about wholistic experiences in nature with others. Outward Bound’s Gutsy Girls provides an adventure experience for women, where they know they are prepared, supported and can expect to succeed.

What do you hope people will walk away with?

We will all celebrate a sense of achievement at the end of our Walpole Gutsy Girls program – for the new experiences enjoyed, the distances traveled and landscapes explored, and the friendships developed.

Anything else you want people to know?
