700 for 70 – Seven Bold Initiatives for Our 70th Year

We are celebrating our 70th birthday this year, and to celebrate we are aiming to raise $700,000 for seven initiatives, such as providing scholarships, upgrading equipment, and strengthening the infrastructure that makes our programs possible. This funding will not only give young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the chance to experience a life-changing Outward Bound adventure; it will secure the future of Outward Bound and ensure we can continue to support young Australians for another 70 years to come!

#1 – 70 Scholarships

At the heart of it all are 70 scholarships, one for every year of Outward Bound. Thanks to the generosity of our donor community, we’ve already raised $110,000 toward this goal. These scholarships open the door for disadvantaged young people to take part in life-changing outdoor programs, often at a pivotal moment in their lives.

The program was unlike nothing else I have done before. I went into it with an open mind, and I finished with a cohort of friends, some valuable techniques learnt and wealth of experiences that I couldn't have gotten from anywhere else. The combination of the people, the places travelled, and the lessons learnt made for an unforgettable experience.

# 2 – 7 Community Programs

We already run several pro-bono day programs for our fellow Canberra-based charities, however experience has taught us that overnight and expedition-style programs can go beyond these and support truly transformational changes for young people. In recognition of this, we are aiming to raise money to fund seven community expedition programs that will see young people get to experience the expedition of a lifetime, without any financial burden.

# 3 – Communal Centre Completion

Where we deliver is just as important as how. In 2021 we set the ambitious goal of building a new Communal Centre at our Tharwa campus – and we are nearly there! This will be an integral shared space for connection and reflection. This milestone has only been possible thanks to the support of a wide network of donors and partners, including our builder Ethical Construction Projects and in-kind contributions from suppliers who have helped bring the project to life. To get across the finish line, we are hoping to get support towards the AV equipment and a yarning circle.

# 4 – Snowy River Acquisition

We’re securing our long-term future on the Snowy River with the purchase of the Booramby property—made possible by the Heyhoe family, who have generously supported us to run programs on their land for over 15 years. Their support has laid the foundation for what comes next, and we are so excited for this new chapter!

# 5 – Walpole WA renovations completion

Across the country in Western Australia, our Walpole base is being renewed thanks to a major grant from Lotterywest. The upgrades are already under way, including sustainable infrastructure and improved facilities that will support programs for years to come. We are still looking for support to help finalise our renovation dreams, including a deck and walkways to protect the native undergrowth and prevent mud transfer inside.

# 6 – Fleet renewal

Behind every program is the logistics that make it possible. With support from long-term partners like Toyota WA, our fleet renewal initiative is helping ensure safe and effective delivery across Australia. As we grow we need further support – we are now looking to expand our fleet to include a new 12-seater van and a 4×4 e-buggy.

# 7 – Staff Development Fund

Last but certainly not least, we are investing in the people who make Outward Bound what it is. Our staff development initiative seeks to build on the passion and expertise of our team, and ensures we are investing not just in programs, but in the people who deliver them.

Each of these seven initiatives stands on its own. But together, they tell a bigger story of growth, renewal, and possibility. We’ve already seen what’s possible. Now, as we step into our next chapter, we invite you to be part of what comes next. Because when we invest in people, in places, and in purpose, we don’t just continue a legacy, we ensure it thrives.
