Platinum Bound – 70 Years Heritage Journey

Outward Bound Australia turns 70 in 2026 and we're inviting you to celebrate with us on a 14-day expedition across our favourite locations in the high country of Australia's Snowy Mountains. A shortened version of the iconic Summit to Sea program, Platinum Bound is a bushwalking and rafting adventure from the summit of Mt Kosciuszko down the Snowy River to Outward Bound's base near Buchan, Victoria.

Highlights include:
• Watch the sunrise from the highest point in Australia
• Hike through the alpine region down to the Snowy River
• 24-hour solo
• Raft the legendary Snowy River
• 14 participants per group + 2 group leaders

This program is for our alumni who want to relive the challenge of the journey and the beauty of the bush. This program is also for our friends not yet found, who have been looking for the chance to get Outward Bound and discover the truth that there is more in us than we know.

Platinum Bound - 70 Years Anniversary Indicative Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome
Roping

Arrive at Outward Bound Australia’s national campus in Tharwa ACT for 11:00am. We’ll introduce you to each other and how the program will run, before getting into some initiatives and group formation activities.

You will have the opportunity to challenge yourself with a roping (heights) activity. Next, it’s time to get into the kitchen and bulk-bake a range of expedition treats to cover your fortnight out.

Days 2-5

Hike Expedition
Mount Kosciusko sunrise

It’s time to depart for your first multi-day expedition. We’ll drive you to Charlotte Pass, then begin the navigation training as you make your way to Seaman’s Hut for the first night out.

Wake up extra early on Day 3 to summit Mount Kosciuszko for sunrise. Retrace your steps to Rawson Pass, and it’s all south to Pinch River Campground via Dead Horse Gap, Cascade Hut and Tin Mine Huts.

Days 6-7

Solo

We’re at the mid-point in your program. It’s time for a change of focus, giving time for personal reflection and recharge with an extended overnight Solo. We will set you up with your own personal campsite, including enough gear, food and shelter to be comfortable, but without distractions.

Days 8-13

Raft Expedition

It’s time to swap those packs for rafts! We’ll launch into the classic Snowy River and let the current help us along our journey. Conditions permitting, we may even get the chance to navigate through a small rapid or three (or more!). Cross the NSW/VIC boarder and pass through iconic program locations such as Willis campground, McKillops Bridge, Little River Junction, Balley Hooley campground and Sandy Point, before finally reaching Orbost by Day 13.

Day 14

Blue Peter Ceremony
Celebration and Farewell

It’s the final day! Wake up, have a hot breakfast, and pack down your campsite one final time. As your program draws to conclusion, we will complete de-issue of your program equipment before celebrating the end of program with your Blue Peter Ceremony.

Finally, it’s in the bus to travel to Bairnsdale Train Station, to depart from 12:30pm (in line with the V-Line train service to Melbourne Southern Cross Station).

Here is your Expedition Packing List

Should I wear hiking boots?
Hiking boots are recommended. Otherwise, try to find lace-up, fully enclosed shoes with rigid soles and good ankle support.

What about wet weather clothing?
Rain jackets are essential for warmth (especially against the wind) and rain protection. Programs continue in most weather conditions, so these items are an essential safety item. Rain pants are recommended but optional.

Will thermals be needed?
Thermals are required for programs running from May to September. For other times, thermals are optional but recommended as a lightweight jumper or pyjamas. Check your specific packing list for further details.

Can I bring my phone?

We’re all for a digital detox – getting back to nature without the daily distraction of mobiles, gaming consoles or tablets. Please leave your devices at home, or our Group Leaders will keep them stored at our base.

How heavy will my bag be?

Your backpack weight and group equipment is specifically designed to stay below 25% of your body weight, so extra items you bring may not be allowed on program. Your bag should be one third for personal clothing and sleeping bag, one third for group equipment and one third for food and water.
