Three girls enjoying Outward Bound's Outdoor Education CoursesOutward Bound outdoor education programs are a fully immersive, wilderness-based learning experience your students will reflect on their entire lives. We challenge young people to reach their full potential through authentic adventure.

Outward Bound Australia has been running expedition based outdoor education programs for youth since 1956.  Key objectives of our school programs are to promote and develop:

  • integrity
  • responsibility
  • resilience
  • compassion
  • community service
  • environmental awareness
  • tenacity in pursuit of a goal, and
  • leadership

“I was particularly pleased with the high quality team-work that took place when outside of their typical social circles, and I look forward to seeing how these future leaders take what they have learned back to the classroom, and community more broadly,” Darren Kay, Teacher, Denmark Senior High School. Read how their partnership with Denmark Shire allows their Year 9 kids to experience this transformatonal program.

This case study from a recent Tweed Schools Environmental Leadership Program is a perfect example of a how an Outward Bound program can deliver life-changing outcomes for students at your school.

Outdoor education programs may include bushwalking, ropes course (high and low), abseiling, rock-climbing, rafting and/or raft-building, canoeing, navigating, bush-cooking, solo, and team building games and initiatives.

Our outdoor education programs represent the highest level of professional outdoor education available in Australia. Numerous schools have cemented an Outward Bound course into their curriculum as a rite of passage for all students.

“It is this sheer professionalism when it comes to technical instruction and specialist group leadership skills that stands out–and this is what enables us to commit to returning to Outward Bound Australia year after year for a Year 10 Rite of Passage program.” Martin Foakes, Head of Outdoor Education, Tanglin Trust School, Singapore

Types of Outdoor Education Programs

Our highly trained and experienced staff deliver a custom designed program using experiential teaching techniques and incorporating challenging activities and initiatives into the framework of the course.

Short Programs: 3-5 days

Outward Bound’s short programs are customised to the outcomes your school wishes to achieve. They can be on-site leadership programs in cabins, wilderness-based journeys, activity-based programs or a blend of all three.

Classic Programs: 7-12 days

Our Classic outdoor education program has remained a rite of passage for thousands of students each year. The extended nature of the journey allows students to completely disengage from their increasingly digital world and reconnect with nature, themselves and their peers on a fundamental level. The ‘classic’ program is designed to challenge and inspire the next generation of school, community and business leaders.

Outward Bound knows the longer the expedition the better the outcomes. We also know modern schools don’t always have longer than a week assigned for their outdoor education program. We will try and work within your timeline,  however anything less than 3 days won’t give you amazing outcomes. A school week, 5 days including travel, is our recommended starting point.

Locations of outdoor education programs

Outward Bound courses currently run in ACT, Victoria and Western Australia. Read more about our areas of operation.
