Francis Greenway High School has been associated with the Year 9 Outward Bound camps for the past three years. We were fortunate to be able to tap into this valuable resource as a result of our school's involvement in the Coal & Allied Community Trust.
At Francis Greenway, we see the Outward Bound camps as a valuable resource in helping to connect our young people with their potential. These camps give students invaluable experiences in pushing their boundaries, extending themselves and being productive members of a team.
When we were first associated with the program we had to encourage students to take part - they were afraid of what they might have to face. This year we have been inundated with requests from Year 9 students to be chosen to go, so much that we have had to develop a selection process within the school.
What have our students gained? Firstly, students develop a sense of pride in themselves and their achievements. Studens come back from camp absolutely amazed at what they have accomplished. Secondly we have seen students return with a new outlook on school and what it can offer them. If they can survive the camp then they believe they can do anything.
What has the school gained? We have the opportunity to offer our students something different, something more challenging than they would ever normally get the chance to do. For our community this is important. Also we have seen in the students who have been on camp a commitment to the school. This year, several of last year's participants actively sought position of our School Representative Council and have been recognised by teachers who have changed in their attitude and application.
In addition to the Year 9 camps, last year saw us send 3 of our School Leaders on a senior leadership camp. Reports from these students have all been outstanding and all have made lifelong friends.
As an educator in today's society, I cannot speak highly enough about the opportunity these camps offer. The camps themselves are well run, highly organised and highly trusted and respected by this school.
I have no hesitation recommending Outward Bound as an organisation and an experience to any member of the community.
