In June 2003, seventy Year Nine students from across three Moree Secondary Schools, participated in the first Outward Bound program for the Moree District. The 7-day wilderness journey in Kyogle (Northern NSW) tested students, teachers and staff alike, however, despite their exhaustion the smiles on the kids faces made it all worthwhile.

Our Outdoor Education programs intervene in this confusing but crucial period of adolescent cognitive development to introduce the vital concept of self-determination. We aim, through the 'learning by doing' principle of experiential education, to introduce the reality of action and consequence, whereby participating students realise, often for the first time, that they determine their own destiny. We aim, by this experience, to enhance the self-confidence, self-awareness and self-esteem of every participating individual, including accompanying teachers, and to foster a sense of community and responsibility.

This project has been successful because of fantastic community support. Moree Family Support and the teachers of the Moree Secondary College have driven the project - promoting the benefits of Outward Bound with the parents and students as well as coordinating local fundraising efforts. The aim of this partnership is to develop sustainable positive behaviour changes in the youth of the local community.

The success of the program in subsequent years has lead to opportunities for other district communities and schools in Central / Western NSW including Narrabri, Dubbo, Bathurst, Orange and more recently Coonamble.

The most challenging thing I have ever undertaken, but the best...

Sam Slacksmith, participant on 2006 Navigator Program and School Captain of Coonamble High School 2007.

Comments from participating teachers included:

Having shared a community experience, a positive foundation has now been laid for building bridges across some of the social divides. As more year groups undertake the program, this will build momentum and support for genuine behaviour and attitude change.

We take with us lots of happy memories and, more importantly, values such as strength, determination, perseverance and cooperation.

We are grateful for the generous support of the Caledonia Foundation, Macquarie Bank Foundation and HBOS Australia for making this program possible.

Coonamble and District Education foundation will receive $50,000 funding under the Australian Government's Stronger Families and Communities Strategy to fund the Outward Bound Program for students of Coonamble High.

The Outward Bound program is part of a concerted community action to address drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, truancy and other problems associated with young people in disadvantaged rural communities.

The Outward Bound program instigates positive and preventative measures to support our young people and strengthen the community.  The project will also support ongoing community leadership and encourage youth involvement in community projects. Outward Bound activities and successes of individual participants will be promoted in the local media.

The Outward Bound program will encourage young people to change their attitudes towards a positive self-image and make improvements to their relationships. This project will target 55 students in 2007 and 2008 in the town of Coonamble.
