It was a well-prepared, full program with a diverse range of presenters that included time to share ideas and thoughts. The symposium provided us with the opportunity to learn, network amongst our fellow Outward Bounders, and reconnect with friends from afar.

The start to the conference was magnificent. The theme of connecting journeys was immediately in place with the hosts greeting the entire contingent with a Hongi, the traditional Maori greeting of pressing noses together, an act that signifies the sharing of the breath and life force. Outward Bound New Zealand chose to run the symposium with the theme of ‘Connecting Journeys’ and to give a taste of what it is like to be an Outward Bound New Zealand course participant.

The days were full and varied with workshops and activities that were generally facilitated in true Outward Bound fashion, so there was plenty of opportunity to share and learn from other Schools and their way of doing things. Topics ranged from  ‘Minimum Equipment Hiking’ to ‘Unaccompanied Students; benefits, risks & management’. A lot of information was presented but the real learning lay in the discussions as to how our different schools tackled various situations. The evenings were also busy with different guest speakers, a talent quest and a Gala dinner.  

It was inspiring and humbling to be part of the experience and to recognise how we are part of the Outward Bound International Family. The challenge now is, as always, to modify and apply what we have learnt and to build on our own great journey.
