Outdoors WA is the peak body for the outdoor industry in Western Australia.
Outdoors WA (Inc) was formed in 2000 following a joint WA Government (Department of Sport and Recreation) and industry consultation process.
Prior to 2000, several organisations represented people working in WA's camping, outdoor recreation, outdoor education and professional instructing services.
The key representative organisations were:
- Camping and Outdoor Education Association of WA
- Adventure Industry Association of WA
- Graduate Outdoor Pursuits (Edith Cowan University) Network.
Each of these groups pursued overlapping objectives with varying degrees of achievement. None were widely regarded or accepted as "industry bodies" either internally within their jurisdictions or externally by government and other authoritative bodies.
The 2000 merger resulted in the formation of Outdoors WA, an incorporated body now officially recognised as the "Peak Industry Body" for outdoor recreation by Government.
Outdoors WA is the WA based operative of the Outdoor Council of Australia and the Australian Camping Association, in addition to being a founding member of the recently launched Active Alliance of Western Australia. (The Alliance represents the entire fitness, recreation, aquatic and parks industry to Government.)
Outdoors WA has an expanding membership base. Key projects include the implementation of the National Outdoor Leader Registration Scheme, the Adventure Activity Standards and the Australian Campsite Accreditation Scheme. In addition, it fulfills roles including the industry code of conduct, publications development, advocacy, cross government liaison, and members' services including an annual state conference. |
