We are opening up seasonal and casual employment opportunities to the Australian and International Outdoor professional field. Traditionally, seasonal or casual staff utilised during our peak seasons have been solely ex-Outward Bound Australia instructors. We are now changing in our approach to seasonal and casual staffing, looking to employ staff from the Outdoor Education field in general. We are seeking staff who have some degree of outdoor education experience, and are looking to build their level of experience further.
We are offering ongoing seasonal and casual work opportunities to the right candidate. Once you have participated in the induction program, you will be added to our staffing pool permanently. Location of Work The areas in which you will work are dependant on operational need, as well as your preferred location. Possible areas include Northern NSW, VIC, ACT and WA. Job opportunities are State based, so you can work close to home if you like. Commencement Dates These are dependent on the area you wish to work in, our next induction program will commence in September 2008. Experience- Experience in high and low ropes course
Training and Qualifications Essential- Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation or equivalent
- Wilderness First Aid (minimum 60hr course)
- Lifeguarding qualification
- Bushwalking skills and experience
- White water level 2 canoe guide
- River Rescue Award or equivalent
- Climb and abseil guide
- Manual drivers licence

Roles and Responsibilities Seasonal or Casual staff fulfil the role of a 'Group Instructor'. This involves instructing as well as supporting Outward Bound experiential education courses, according to client aims, as well as Outward Bound Australia operating procedures, philosophy and values. Specifically:- Assist in the packing for a mobile area and assist in setup of area.
- Prepare equipment, food and other resources as required for course(s) and / or area(s).
- Ensure appropriate level of understanding of operational area through participation in touring days.
- Ensure appropriate level of understanding of client requirements through pre-course briefing.
- Facilitate a process to ensure accompanying teacher has clear role and responsibilities.
- Attend to the physical, social, emotional well being of the group, and each individual within the group.
- Have an awareness of program issues external to the group, eg: logistical or medical incidents.
- Maintain communication with back-up/support staff and the Course Coordinator with regard to activity timings, individual and group issues.
- Adhere to Outward Bound Australia safety procedures, exercise sound judgements, and consult with the Course Coordinator/Team Coordinator as required.
- Present activities in a safe, educational manner, ensuring all participants have sufficient understanding of that activity, to the extent of their ability.
- Assess and repair damaged issue equipment, as required, on and after course.
- Complete all paperwork as required in a timely, professional manner.
- Receive feedback from supervisors and peers about performance.
- Offer feedback about individual staff performance, course effectiveness and outcomes.
- Act in a backup/support capacity when required.
- Clean up and repair equipment upon completion of course.
- Assist in the operation of a mobile area.
- Provide support to Outward Bound Australia general operations in a wide range of tasks.
