Often, teachers are interested to know what they can do to prepare for the physical aspects of a school program. While above average fitness is not required to complete an Outward Bound course, some effective physical preparation will make it easier. Outward Bound encourages and recommends teachers and participants engage in some physical preparation before course, and maintain a healthy lifestyle post-course.
Some handy suggestions that might help you get stared:
Seek advice if you are not sure where to start or what to do (Doctor, gym instructor, etc)
Increase exercise gradually and extend yourself a bit more each session (eg. brisk walking, jogging, swimming, aerobics, etc).
Stretch thoroughly before and after exercise, and at any opportunity you get!
Highly recommended is walking with a backpack and in the boots you intend to wear on course. Start with a light pack and increase the weight slowly to improve your "pack fitness".
Include core-stability/ strength exercises as part of your routine (eg.crunches, squats, push ups, etc.)
Maintain a healthy diet, incorporating lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, lean meat and healthy snacks.
If you smoke, or drink alcohol or caffeine, reduce or eliminate your consumption as part of your preparation.
