Teacher Information

Outward Bound School Programs are more than an isolated Outdoor Education experience. We work closely with teachers and their school to develop the program for their students. During the programs, teachers play an important and integral role in the facilitation of the students' learning experience. This page provides information to help teachers prepare for and make the most of their Outward Bound experience. This page also shares many of the benefits and rewards that teachers have received when attending Outward Bound with their students.

Outward Bound's Educational Approach PDF Print E-mail

An Outward Bound course is designed using the principles of Experiential Outdoor Education.  Experiential Outdoor Education is 'learning through doing'. Throughout the course, students are actively engaged in questioning, investigating, experimenting, solving problems, assuming responsibility, and being creative.  An Outward Bound course is not restricted to the confines of timetables, syllabus and curriculum; so lessons are learnt as participants are ready to learn them- often at different speeds and at different times.  As participants learn, they are encouraged to transfer the lessons into their own 'real-world' context.

Physical Preparation PDF Print E-mail
Often, teachers are interested to know what they can do to prepare for the physical aspects of a school program. While above average fitness is not required to complete an Outward Bound course, some effective physical preparation will make it easier. Outward Bound encourages and recommends teachers and participants engage in some physical preparation before course, and maintain a healthy lifestyle post-course.

Frequently Asked Questions by Teachers PDF Print E-mail

Teachers are an integral part of our Schools Programs.  If you have any further concerns or require more information then please talk to the Coordinating Teacher at your school or contact us .

How many teachers do we need to provide for course?
One teacher for each group of around 13-18 students should be provided. Each group will have one teacher and one instructor.
If there are three or more groups of students the school needs to provide an additional backup teacher to stay at basecamp and assist.

Do the teachers have direct responsibility?
Occasionally you may. In emergency situations, when a radio call needs to be made or when the group needs to collect supplies. In these instances, the instructor and teacher need to communicate effectively so that both are competent, and the group's safety is still the priority.  In most instances, the instructor has direct responsibility for the group.
