PreviewAs a Registered Training Organisation, Outward Bound acts as a support and training provider for the Outdoor Recreation Industry within Australia. The Learning and Development Department trains our current and future staff, and encourages their life-long learning. Our primary focus is the delivery of Nationally Recognised Training in Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation, which forms part of our Internship program, and aids in the development of future staff members.



Professional Outdoor Leader Internship PDF Print E-mail

Outward Bound's Professional Outdoor Leader Internship is Australia's leading qualification to work in the Outdoor Industry. Outward Bound Australia has produced the most significant number of graduates since the inception of the program in 1999 and consistently receives high levels of feedback from graduates and current students. The Australian and International industry rate Outward Bound employees and graduates as amongst the most skilled, talented and passionate professionals in the industry. This training is considered to be an international benchmark in the professional outdoor training by many Outward Bound schools internationally. This table outlines the key differences between the training and qualifications offered by Outward Bound when compared with the standard qualification offered elsewhere in the industry.

Work Experience

Usually coordinated by students.
  • 60 days on-the-job ($2700)
  • On-the-job experience includes a variety of roles, experiences and locations.
  • Work experience has a strong and rich personal development focus both for students and staff.
  • All work experience organised for the students by Outward Bound Australia.

Career Pathways


The Standard Certificate IV is the basic requirement for most providers in Australia.
  • Ongoing full-time employment opportunities with Australia's oldest and most respected Outdoor Experiential Personal Development Provider.
  • International Outdoor Career Pathways through Outward Bound network of Schools in over 30 countries. Outward Bound Australia is the most highly regarded outdoor training school in the OB International network.
  • Employment opportunities with other Australian Outdoor Education providers.

Life Experiences


Most Certificate IV programs are delivered in day mode, requiring students to arrange their own transport to training and work experience locations and provide their own source of accommodation and food, whilst training.
  • Accommodation, including electricity, rates/water bills and local phone calls($1904) $59.50 per week
  • Meals ($1344) $42 per week
    (Accommodation and food costs are based on the full 8 months)
  • Travel costs between training locations, including national park fees ($300)
  • Experience the Outward Bound philosophy and educational approach

TOTAL INVESTMENT


The cost of a standard Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation can vary from institution to institution. Costs usually cover basic tuition and not the addition components of living expenses and arranging own work experience.


The TOTAL VALUE of Outward Bound Australia's Professional Outdoor Leader Internship is $14,000.

The TOTAL INVESTMENT for Australians is $10,000.

The TOTAL INVESTMENT for non-Australians is  $14,000 (International Students)

*One full scholarship available per intake.


Notes on Advanced Qualifications 

  • Value is based upon cost of delivery of this program with 12 per group. The Safe Leadership, Vertical Rescue and Ropes Course Construction qualifications are not currently available separately.
  • Leaders Wilderness Advanced First Aid is available separately from WMI. Price quote is at 1/3/2008. Outward Bound Australia requires this high standard of qualification.
  • Bronze Medallion is available separately from RLSAA. Price quote is at 27/2/2008.

Outward Bound Australia became a Registered Training Organisation in 1999, allowing for the scope to deliver Certificates II to IV in Outdoor Recreation, as well as Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. We have since extended our capabilities to include the Diploma in Outdoor Recreation. 

Outward Bound consistently produces over 30% of all Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation Qualifications in Australia, and has a highly regarded reputation.
