Australia's longest serving and leading Outdoor Education provider
Outward Bound programs support curriculum across key learning areas. Moreover, it is the "plus-factor" that sets Outward Bound apart from the rest. Outward Bound provides students with the attitudes life skills and inner strength that lead them to greater achievement and well-being back at school.
Outward Bound is recognised as Australia's leading provider of Outdoor Education Programs for Schools. Working with Public, Catholic and Independent schools, Outward Bound seeks to meet the unique needs of each school. This page aims to provide information for schools to help them construct an effective Outdoor Education program. If your school requires any further information or consultation, please contact us.
School Outdoor Education courses are specially designed in consultation with the school to complement and reinforce the school's curriculum and philosophy. Programs are based on guided discovery learning and are aimed at the personal development of each student while meeting the specific goals set by the school. For some schools the Outward Bound experience has formed an integral part of the school's personal development and outdoor education program for over 20 years.
Aims of a school course may include: self discovery, personal achievements, teamwork, cooperation, awareness of others, increased responsibility, Problem solving, and an appreciation of the environment.
We also offer specific Leadership programs for older students who wish to develop their leadership skills, or students becoming school captains or prefects etc.
School courses are journey based and typically range between 7-12 days, for the year levels 9 - 12 and run in several locations across Australia. Our highly trained and experienced staff deliver a custom designed program using experiential teaching techniques and incorporating challenging activities and initiatives into the framework of the course.
Some of the activities may include: expeditioning, Ropes Course (high and low), abseiling, rockclimbing, rafting and/or raft-building, canoeing, navigating, bushcooking, Solo, and team building games and initiatives.
Benefits to the Student
An Outward Bound program is a unique and memorable growth experience, which provides students with numerous opportunities to challenge their own perceptions of themselves and understanding of others.
The program style fosters development of social skills including communication, teamwork, responsibility and initiative, tolerance, compassion, and an understanding of leadership roles. This is especially important during the transition from youth to adulthood. Through real life experiences, the student is able to overcome real challenges and reach their potential, gaining more insight into themselves and others.
Equally as important the program is full of action and fun activities to make learning even more enjoyable.
Marist College Canberra is a Catholic school for boys located in the Suburb of Pearce in Canberra. The school has an enrolment of some 1600 boys and is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2008. An Outward Bound program has been part of the school’s curriculum since 1982.
Marist Canberra runs an extensive, rigorous Outdoor Education program in which all students participate. Camps are conducted for boys in Years 5 to 10. These camps follow a variety of patterns with an increasing level of challenge and culminate in the ten-day Outward Bound program. These outdoor activities are designed to complement the religious and academic development of the students, and to promote qualities of self-reliance, initiative, cooperation, confidence, leadership, and the capacity to deal with significant emotional and physical challenges.
Marist Canberra also offers The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme to students in years 9 to 12 on weekends, as an additional avenue to pursue those objectives.
