Nearly 40 students were recently selected by The Smith Family to spend seven days pushing their limits on Outward Bound Australia Leadership courses. The courses were the latest Aspiring Leaders courses for NSW and Victoria, with students selected from schools in Mt Druitt, Bairnsdale and Melbourne taking part.

With the support of third party funding the Smith Family was able to offer these students the opportunity to develop confidence and life skills to help them with the transition from school to work or tertiary study.

The Smith Family works closely with schools and communities to provide children from disadvantaged backgrounds education and learning support programs to help them realise their potential.

The Outward Bound Leadership Course is one such program which offers students the chance to build on their talents and grow their self esteem which is important for their future development.

The participants will take the skills they learned on Outward Bound home with them, where they will be encouraged to use them to help their community. The opportunity to capitalise on their leadership ability is a highlight of the course’s outcomes.

Chief Executive Officer of The Smith Family, Elaine Henry, said “The Smith Family was pleased to be able to partner with Outward Bound for this venture which has enabled delegates to explore their leadership talents and motivate themselves to share their new skills with their respective communities.”

The Aspiring Leaders courses are made available in as many states as possible. At the end of October, Outward Bound will deliver a further seven day leadership course to a group of future leaders from Redlands in South Brisbane.
