Community Impact of the National Aspiring Leaders Program

The National Aspiring Leaders Summit '08 had a significant impact on both the young people who participated and the communities of which they represented. Each young person selected an Action Project to conduct on their return home. These projects included: 

Environment and Conservation Projects

  • Implementing recycling at school – Canberra, ACT
  • Completing the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award & designing and building a memorial garden at her school – Kimba, SA

Health and Well-Being Projects

  • Designing an e-newsletter for a HIV/AIDS charity – Melbourne, VIC
  • Promote and raise awareness for Blood Donation – Braidwood, NSW
  • “Where’s your head at?” - Mental Health Awareness Project (team of two young people) – Hamley Bridge (Clare Valley), SA
  • “Break Free Concert”, an awareness project on Sexual Abuse (team of three young people) – Adelaide SA, Perth WA, Townsville, QLD
  • Safe driving – stop road trauma – Inglewood, SA
  • Attitude towards alcohol – Ballarat, VIC
  • Mental Health for Youth – Kangaroo Island, SA
  • “Drugs off the Street” – bring awareness to and stop the use of hard drugs in local area – Logan, QLD

Youth Empowerment and Community Participation Projects

  • Rural Sport for Kids – encouraging rural kids to participate in local sporting teams – Mt Torrens, SA
  • To become a facilitator in local youth empowerment programs with the Reach Foundation – Melbourne, VIC
  • Establish a Youth Council and organise youth events – Boorowa, NSW
  • Build a Skate Park - Coonamble, NSW
  • Setting up an Open House at a local church – Young, NSW
  • Make School Friendly – Junee, NSW
  • Time 4 Kids – events for children in foster care – Birdwood, SA
  • Establish Youth Group for local community – Robertstown, SA

Global and Cultural Projects

  • Multicultural Awareness – a school-based initiative encouraging students to learn about the cultures of foreign students – Yass, NSW
  • “Schools 4 Schools” – setting up a sponsorship program whereby an Australian school fundraises for an African school – Melbourne, VIC
