Certificate IV Internship: Learn More

The Outward Bound Internship is much more than just a Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation. Our Interns are our future Instructors and because of that we invest heavily in them from the start. If you get selected for our Internship then we believe that you have what it takes to become an Outward Bound Instructor. The OBA Internship differs from a standard Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation in some very fundamental ways.

  • Our Interns are our future staff. Because of that, we select very carefully and we invest heavily.
  • Our Internship is residential. We believe that a residential experience maximises both learning opportunities and the potential development of our Interns. We also believe that it represents the very best in terms of value for money.
  • Our Internship is about creating industry ready instructors. There are many more training blocks involved in an OBA Internship than there are in a conventional Certificate IV Outdoor Recreation. For example, you’ll get both a LWAFA first aid certificate and a Bronze Medallion. Plus, in addition to the essential Cert IV competencies in expeditioning and climbing, you’ll also get training in ropes courses, white water rafting,  and 4 wheel driving,  to name but a few.
  • Our Interns get more than 40 days of work experience at Outward Bound Australia. As an OBA Intern you have access to the very best work experience in Australia. You’ll also get the opportunity to see some amazing parts of the country. OBA delivers courses in NSW, Victoria, WA and the ACT.
  • Our Interns get jobs. Most of our Interns end up being our Instructors. Because we select you as potential staff members we invest in you much more heavily than a normal Cert IV provider would. OBA Interns have access to some of the very best outdoor education jobs not only in Australia but throughout the world. The Outward Bound network extends to more than 40 countries and our staff have gone on to work in many of them. And if you choose to go on and work for another outdoor provider then having Outward Bound Australia on your CV will open many doors.

Selection process

The application process for the Certificate IV Internship consists of two parts:

  • Apply by filling out an application form and forwarding this to the appropriate contact with a CV and cover letter.
  • If your written application is successful you will be invited to a selection weekend. The purpose of this weekend is twofold; it gives you an opportunity to see what Outward Bound is all about while giving our recruiting staff an insight into you. It's important that you're as invested in a career in Outdoor Education as we are. If you are successful you will be offered a position in the Certificate IV Internship Program.
